Welcome to the internet site of the community of Isernhagen. It was founded in 1974 by union of the associations of communities of Isernhagen and Kirchwarmbüchen. Isernhagen is located on the outskirts north of the state capital of Hanover. About 24.900 inhabitants live in the 7 formerly independent communities of:
In the 13th century, the village of Isernhagen was formed as four farmers' communities (Bauerschaft). Among other things due to the relatively short distances between the individual farmers' communities, Isernhagen became a coherent street village. "Isern" stands for "iron" because, in the Middle Ages, bog iron stone found in the Wietze flats was smelted here and later was used as building material. The St. Mary's Church in Isernhagen K.B. built in the 15th century is an impressive example.
The farmers of the four old villages exercised many sidelines. Especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, the gained acceptable prosperity by hop and horse trade. The half-timbered houses that are typical of Isernhagen date from that time.
Isernhagen offers many leisure amenities. In that connection, particular mention is to be made of the Isernhagenhof, the cultural centre on an old farm area, and the North-Hanoverian Farmhouse Museum at the Wöhler-Dusche Farm, as well as of the manifold places for swimming and cycling/hiking paths.
